3-2-1-regeln för backup är ditt skyddsnät mot att någonsin förlora data, helt enkelt genom att ha tre kopior av din data, på två olika typer av media, och minst en backup på annan plats. Det bästa du kan göra är att använda dina gamla diskar som backuper och lämna dem hos en vän eller släkting. Om du är orolig för att de ska läsa datan kan du använda BitLocker eller andra metoder för fullständig diskkryptering.
Tabellen ovan visar priser i realtid på externa diskar för din marknad, för att bygga en riktig backup handlar om att äga några bra diskar, och de är billigare än du tror.
Regeln, uppdelad
Låt mig gå igenom varje siffra, för var och en skyddar mot något annat.
- Tre kopior. Originalet plus två backuper. En backup är bra, två är säkert.
- Två typer av media. Lägg inte alla ägg i samma korg. Till exempel en intern disk plus en extern disk, eller en NAS plus molnet.
- En på annan plats. Minst en kopia förvaras någon helt annanstans, så en husbrand eller ett inbrott kan inte ta allt.
Uppfyll alla tre och du är skyddad mot nästan allt som förstör data.
Varför varje del är viktig
Varje siffra finns där av en anledning, och hoppar du över en lämnar du ett hål.
Tre kopior skyddar dig när en disk dör, vilket alla gör förr eller senare.
Två typer av media skyddar dig när en hel kategori fallerar, som ett dåligt diskparti eller ett korrupt system.
En kopia på annan plats är hjälten. Det är den som överlever branden, översvämningen, stölden och ransomware som krypterar allt i ditt hus på en gång.
Missar du kopian på annan plats kan en enda dålig dag radera flera års minnen.
En enkel verklig setup
Du behöver inget avancerat. Här är en setup som de flesta kan bygga.
- Kopia ett: datan på din dator eller NAS. Originalet.
- Kopia två: en lokal backup på en separat extern disk eller en andra box.
- Kopia tre: en kopia på annan plats, antingen molnlagring eller en disk som förvaras hos en släkting.
Köp diskarna till detta via tabellen ovan i realtid, och jaga bästa pris per TB. Lagring är billigt. Dina foton och filer är det inte.
Var RAID passar in
Snabb myt att krossa, för folk missförstår det här ständigt.
RAID är ingen backup. Det håller en maskin igång när en disk dör, men det skyddar inte mot radering, ransomware eller stöld.
Så RAID kan vara en del av kopia ett, och ge dig drifttid, men det räknas aldrig som din andra eller tredje kopia. Vi förklarar varför i detalj i är RAID en backup.
Slutsatsen
3-2-1-regeln för backup är tre kopior, på två typer av media, med en förvarad på annan plats. Det är den enklaste planen som faktiskt skyddar dig mot alla vanliga sätt att förlora data på.
Bygg den med billiga diskar från tabellen ovan i realtid, se till att kopian på annan plats verkligen finns, och du slipper någonsin den där äckliga känslan av att förlora allt. Det är den billigaste försäkring du någonsin köper.
Kom ihåg, RAID är ingen backup, och det enklaste du kan göra just nu är att använda en gammal disk för att göra en kopia av din data, eller köpa en extern disk bara för att ha den där extra kopian av det viktigaste, även om du inte kan säkerhetskopiera allt, bara det viktigaste.
