Om du är en person som säkerhetskopierar en dator är externa diskar helt lysande.
- Superenkelt. Koppla in, kopiera, koppla ur.
- Billigt. Ingen extra låda, ingen nätverksutrustning, ingen fläkt som surrar hela dagen.
- Portabelt. Förvara en kopia hemma hos en kompis för gratis offsite-backup.
För många är två externa diskar förvarade på två platser en komplett, förnuftig lagrings- och backupplan. Låt inte internet skambelägga dig för det.
När en NAS faktiskt förtjänar sin plats
En NAS är inte bara en större extern disk. Det är en helt annan grej, och den är värd det när du behöver det den unikt erbjuder.
- Alltid på, så att varje enhet kan nå dina filer utan att du behöver koppla in något.
- Delad i hela hushållet, telefoner, laptops, tv-apparater, allt samtidigt.
- Kör appar, som Plex för media eller backup-verktyg som bara fungerar i bakgrunden.
- Redundans, så att en enda disk som dör inte förlorar din data.
Om du märker att du vill ha två eller fler av dessa saker, slutar en NAS vara en lyx och blir istället det rätta valet.
Den ärliga kostnadsskillnaden
Här är det ingen gärna säger rakt ut.
En NAS är lådan plus diskarna plus strömmen den drar varje timme, varje dag. Externa diskar är bara diskarna.
Så om dina behov är enkla, är en NAS mycket extra pengar och komplexitet för funktioner du aldrig kommer använda.
Kolla livetabellen för diskpriser, och var sedan ärlig med om du betalar för funktionalitet du faktiskt behöver eller bara för häftighetsfaktorn.

Kör dig själv genom det här.
- En dator, vill bara ha backuper: köp två externa diskar, förvara en offsite. Klart.
- Flera enheter, vill ha delad alltid-på-lagring: en NAS är värd det.
- Vill ha Plex, redundans, eller gillar att skruva: skaffa NAS:en, du kommer gilla det.
Det finns inget fel svar, bara det rätta för din situation.
