Så om du har lagt Plex på en NAS med RAID av något slag, vilket som helst, då vill du ha en bra CMR-disk. Ja, egentligen vilken CMR-disk som helst. Vem bryr sig om vad det är, var den varit tidigare eller hur många timmar den snurrat? Inte du: du har redundans i din NAS. Det är min åsikt, så gå för lägsta pris per gigabyte på en CMR-disk oavsett märke.
Har du bara Plex liggande på din PC, enbart för filmer, funkar vilken snurrande disk som helst, SMR, CMR, den billigaste. Filmer och TV-serier belastar inte lagringen förrän du når 12K-upplösning, vilket är osannolikt på din Plex-server!

Stora hårddiskar är kärnan i det hela
Låt mig döda SSD-fantasin direkt.
Ditt mediebibliotek behöver inte SSD-hastighet. En film strömmas av disken i en lugn, jämn ström, långt långsammare än vad ens en sliten hårddisk klarar av.
Fyll alltså bays med stora, billiga och pålitliga hårddiskar och jaga lägsta pris per TB i live-tabellen.
En liten SSD för operativsystemet eller Plex metadata är helt okej. Själva innehållet hör hemma på snurrande skivor.
NAS-diskar kontra desktop-diskar
Det här är den eviga homelab-debatten, så här är min ärliga syn.
En låda med en eller två bays går oftast utmärkt med bra desktop-diskar. Ingen anledning att krångla till det.
Så fort du staplar fyra, sex eller åtta diskar i samma chassi förändras läget. Vibrationer från alla snurrande skivor, konstant drift dygnet runt och värme börjar bita. NAS- och enterprise-diskar är anpassade precis för det, och de gör verkligen skäl för sig i en tät låda.
Matcha disken mot bygget, inte mot skryt på forum.
Pålitlighet utan myter
Alla vill hitta det magiska, mest pålitliga märket. Sanningen är mindre spännande.
Moderna diskar från de stora tillverkarna är alla överlag pålitliga. Haverier hänger mer ihop med tur, arbetsbelastning och kylning än med loggan.
Ältа alltså inte märke. Gör istället det här.
- Kör redundans, som RAIDZ2 eller dubbel spegling, så att två diskar kan dö utan att du drabbas.
- Ha en kopia offsite eller i molnet av allt som är omöjligt att ersätta.
- Kyl diskarna ordentligt och packa dem inte i en hetlåda.
Redundans slår märkeslojalitet varje enda gång.
Så här skulle jag köpa
Den enkla, täta och billiga planen.
- Välj kapaciteten som ligger lägst i pris per TB i live-tabellen ovan.
- Köp tillräckligt många diskar för att köra ordentlig redundans redan från start.
- Lämna en eller två bays lediga så att framtida du kan expandera utan ombyggnad.
- Lägg till en liten SSD för operativsystemet om din NAS stödjer det.
