Er zitten hier eigenlijk twee vragen door elkaar: beste keuze voor NAS, en beste keuze voor Plex. Die worden vaak door elkaar gehaald omdat zoveel mensen hun Plex-server op een NAS draaien.
Dus, als je Plex op een NAS met RAID van welke soort dan ook hebt staan, dan wil je een goede CMR-schijf. Nou ja, eigenlijk maakt het merk niet eens uit, zolang het maar CMR is. Wie interesseert het wat het is, waar hij vandaan komt, of hoeveel uur hij al gedraaid heeft? Jij niet: je hebt redundantie in je NAS. Dat is mijn mening, dus ga voor de laagste prijs per gig op een CMR-schijf, ongeacht het merk.
Draait Plex gewoon op je pc, puur voor films, dan voldoet elke draaiende schijf: SMR, CMR, gewoon de goedkoopste. Films en series belasten je storage pas echt bij 12K-resolutie, en dat ga je op je Plex-server niet snel tegenkomen!

Grote harde schijven vormen de kern
Laat me eerst de SSD-fantasie de kop indrukken.
Je mediabibliotheek heeft geen SSD-snelheid nodig. Een film streamt in een rustig trickeltje van de schijf af, veel langzamer dan zelfs een verouderde harde schijf kan leveren.
Vul de bays dus met grote, goedkope, betrouwbare harde schijven en jaag op de laagste prijs per TB in de live tabel.
Een kleine SSD voor het besturingssysteem of de Plex-metadata is prima. De daadwerkelijke content hoort thuis op spinning rust.
NAS-schijven versus desktop-schijven
Dit is het eeuwige homelab-debat, dus hier is mijn eerlijke mening.
Een box met één of twee bays draait meestal probleemloos op goede desktop-schijven. Daar hoef je niet over te piekeren.
Zodra je vier, zes of acht schijven in één behuizing stapelt, verandert dat. Trilling van al die draaiende platters, constant always-on gebruik, en warmte gaan dan een rol spelen. NAS- en enterprise-schijven zijn precies daarop afgestemd, en in een dichte behuizing verdienen ze hun geld terug.
Match de schijf met de build, niet met forum-opschepperij.
Betrouwbaarheid zonder de mythes
Iedereen wil het magische, meest betrouwbare merk weten. De waarheid is minder spannend.
Moderne schijven van de grote namen zijn allemaal redelijk betrouwbaar. Falen hangt meer samen met pech, workload en koeling dan met het logo.
Maak je dus niet druk om het merk. Doe dit in plaats daarvan.
- Draai redundantie, zoals RAIDZ2 of een dubbele mirror, zodat er twee schijven kunnen uitvallen zonder problemen.
- Houd een offsite of cloud-back-up van alles wat onvervangbaar is.
- Koel de schijven goed en propt ze niet in een hotbox.
Redundantie wint altijd van merkentrouw.
Hoe ik het zou kopen
Het simpele, dichte, goedkope plan.
- Kies de capaciteit die het laagst scoort op prijs per TB in de live tabel hierboven.
- Koop genoeg schijven om vanaf dag één fatsoenlijke redundantie te draaien.
- Laat een of twee bays vrij zodat je later kunt uitbreiden zonder rebuild.
- Voeg één kleine SSD toe voor het OS als je NAS dat ondersteunt.
