Je hebt een NAS nodig als je van plan bent bestanden te delen met meer dan één computer of apparaat, 24/7. Heb je geen van beide nodig, dan heb je meestal ook geen NAS nodig. De enige uitzondering is als je data simpelweg niet op één schijf past; dan heb je misschien een NAS nodig, maar wellicht volstaat ook gewoon een extra externe schijf. Vaak is een externe schijf al genoeg en scheelt dat een hoop geld.
Maar ben je een tinkerer, gek van computers, of wil je downloads ‘s nachts laten doorlopen? Dan koop je toch gewoon een NAS!

Laat me de bescheiden externe schijf even verdedigen, want die wordt onterecht weggezet als tweederangs.
Ben je één persoon die back-ups maakt van één computer? Dan zijn externe schijven briljant.
- Doodsimpel. Aansluiten, kopiëren, loskoppelen.
- Goedkoop. Geen extra behuizing, geen netwerkapparatuur, geen ventilator die de hele dag zoemt.
- Draagbaar. Bewaar er eentje bij een vriend voor een gratis offsite back-up.
Voor veel mensen zijn twee externe schijven op twee locaties een compleet, verstandig opslag- en back-upplan. Laat je door internet niet wijsmaken dat dat niet genoeg is.
Wanneer een NAS zijn geld echt waard is

- Redundantie, zodat het uitvallen van één schijf niet meteen dataverlies betekent.
Merk je dat je twee of meer van deze dingen wilt? Dan is een NAS geen luxe meer, maar de juiste keuze.
Het eerlijke prijsverschil
Dit is wat niemand graag hardop zegt.
Een NAS is de behuizing plus de schijven plus het stroomverbruik dat elk uur van elke dag doortikt. Externe schijven zijn gewoon de schijven.
Zijn je wensen simpel, dan betaal je bij een NAS flink extra voor complexiteit en functies die je toch niet gebruikt.

Een simpele manier om te beslissen
Loop dit even na.
- Eén computer, gewoon back-ups: koop twee externe schijven, bewaar er één elders. Klaar.
- Meerdere apparaten, gedeelde always-on opslag gewenst: dan is een NAS de moeite waard.
- Plex, redundantie, of gewoon zin om te knutselen: haal die NAS, je gaat er plezier van hebben.
Er is geen fout antwoord, alleen het juiste antwoord voor jouw situatie.

Je hebt een NAS nodig als je always-on, gedeelde, redundante opslag wilt die apps kan draaien. Je hebt externe schijven nodig als je gewoon goedkope, simpele back-ups wilt voor één machine.
