Zodra je het eerste jaar voorbij bent, zit je meestal wel goed voor nog minstens 3 of 4 jaar. Kijk je naar mijn eigen schijven, dan gaat de ene minder dan een jaar mee en de andere meer dan 10, het ligt er maar net aan welke je pakt! Serieus, er is geen harde grens, dat zou te makkelijk zijn. Hieronder leg ik de ‘badkuipcurve’ uit van de levensverwachting van een schijf. Uiteraard gaat hij ooit kapot, en die dag is GEGARANDEERD het slechtst denkbare moment. Ik weet het, het is mij overkomen: de console mee op vakantie met games gedownload, dood, nadat ik uit voorzorg nog 2 nieuwe kabels had gekocht.
De tabel hierboven laat live vervangingsprijzen op jouw marktplaats zien voor als die dag echt komt. Bookmark ‘m en leun achterover, want die dag ligt waarschijnlijk verder weg dan je vreest.
De vorm van schijfuitval
Schijfuitval is niet willekeurig verdeeld over de levensduur. Er zit een patroon in.
Denk aan een badkuip.
Uitval clustert vroeg, in het eerste jaar, wanneer fabricagefouten zich openbaren. Daarna volgt een lange, rustige middenperiode waarin gezonde schijven gewoon hun werk doen. Na de vijf jaar grens loopt de uitval weer op naarmate slijtage toeslaat.
Een schijf die zijn eerste jaar overleeft, heeft dus veel vertrouwen verdiend. Maak je geen zorgen over een schijf van drie jaar oud die perfect functioneert.
Vervang op bewijs, niet op de kalender
Dit is waar mensen de fout in gaan.
Een kerngezonde schijf van vier jaar oud weggooien omdat hij “oud” is, is pure verspilling.
Vervang een schijf pas als hij daar reden toe geeft, niet vanwege zijn verjaardag.
- SMART-data laat oplopende reallocated of pending sectors zien.
- Hij begint vreemd te klikken, te schuren of te loeien.
- Bestanden weigeren te openen of overdrachten kruipen vooruit.
- Hij geeft lees- of schrijffouten.
Een stille schijf met schone SMART-waarden kan zijn werk lang na het verstrijken van de garantie blijven doen.
De waarschuwingssignalen om op te reageren
Als een schijf echt begint af te takelen, waarschuwt hij je meestal. Luister ernaar.
De klassieke tekenen zijn geluid en SMART-cijfers. Een gezonde schijf is saai en stil. Een stervende schijf wordt luid, traag, of begint bad sectors te loggen.
Zodra je zoiets ziet, doe je twee dingen, in deze volgorde.
Maak direct een back-up. Plan daarna de vervanging.
Niet andersom.
Hoe je nooit meer bang hoeft te zijn voor uitval
Het echte geheim is dat het uitvallen van één schijf nooit een ramp zou moeten zijn.
- Draai met redundantie, zodat één dode schijf een schouderophaal is, geen catastrofe.
- Houd een offsite of cloud back-up van alles wat onvervangbaar is.
- Check af en toe de SMART-status, zodat uitval je nooit verrast.
- Koop bij vervanging op prijs per TB via de live tabel hierboven.
Zet dat op orde en de levensduur van een schijf wordt een nieuwsgierigheidje, geen zorg.
De conclusie
Harde schijven gaan doorgaans drie tot vijf jaar mee, vaak veel langer, met uitval geclusterd aan het allereerste begin en in de latere jaren.
Vervang op bewijs, niet op leeftijd. Houd de SMART-data in de gaten, luister naar geluid, houd back-ups aan, en pak bij een echt noodzakelijke vervanging de beste prijs per TB uit de live tabel hierboven. Zo blijft je data veilig en gooi je nooit een goede schijf te vroeg weg.
De enige remedie tegen een defecte schijf is een andere schijf klaar hebben staan als vervanger, idealiter zat hij al in een mirror of in een NAS, zodat je het amper merkt, behalve een kleine melding.
