Je wilt spinning drives tegen de laagste prijs per GB/TB die je kunt vinden, zelfs tweedehands schijven. Je slaat films op die je opnieuw kunt downloaden, of waarvoor je al redundantie hebt via je Unraid of ZFS setup, dus een kapotte schijf is een ongemak, geen ramp. Wanneer je een film afspeelt, lees je de data gewoon sequentieel van de platters in de HDD, dus de razendsnelle random read access van een SSD heb je simpelweg niet nodig.
De tabel hierboven laat al de goedkoopste grote harde schijven op jouw marketplace zien, en dat is precies wat een mediabibliotheek nodig heeft.
Films hebben geen snelheid nodig. Ze hebben goedkope ruimte nodig. Heel veel.
Waarom harde schijven altijd winnen voor media
Een film streamt in een langzaam, gestaag straaltje van de schijf.
Je ogen zien geen enkel verschil tussen een film die laadt vanaf een bloedsnelle NVMe of een bescheiden spinning drive. Beide leveren de video sneller aan dan je kunt kijken.
SSD-geld uitgeven om films op te slaan is dus alsof je een Ferrari koopt om pizza’s te bezorgen.
Koop groot, goedkoop en saai. De prijs per TB in de live tabel is hier het enige cijfer dat ertoe doet. En omdat de belasting alleen-lezen en sequentieel is, is dit een van de weinige plekken waar tweedehands of gereviseerde schijven kopen echt zinvol is, zolang je maar redundantie achter de hand hebt.
De SSD-valkuil voor mediaservers
Elke paar weken vraagt iemand of ze hun Plex-box uit SSD’s moeten bouwen.
Doe dat alsjeblieft niet.
Je betaalt vijf keer zoveel voor snelheid die de content nooit zal gebruiken. Eén kleine SSD als cache of voor het besturingssysteem is het maximum dat een mediaserver nodig heeft. De bibliotheek zelf hoort op grote, vette ‘spinning rust’ harde schijven.
Steek de besparing liever in meer terabytes.
Hoe ik het zou bouwen
Hier is mijn simpele plan voor mediaopslag.
- Koop twee of meer grote harde schijven bovenaan de live value tabel, nieuw of tweedehands.
- Draai ze met redundantie, Unraid of ZFS, zodat het uitvallen van één schijf je collectie niet wegvaagt.
- Zorg dat de écht onvervangbare data (de dingen die je niet zomaar opnieuw kunt downloaden) ook ergens anders geback-upt staat.
- Laat ruimte over, want bibliotheken groeien altijd.
Zo bouw je een stille, goedkope, uitbreidbare kluis voor alles wat je wilt bekijken.
Even iets over 4K
4K-content is het enige dat je opslag levend zal opeten.
Eén enkele 4K-film kan 40 tot 80GB zijn. Stapel er een paar honderd op elkaar en ineens lijkt 20TB klein.
Dus als je voor volledige kwaliteit gaat, kies dan voor de grootste schijven in de live tabel en koop meer capaciteit dan je vandaag denkt nodig te hebben.
De conclusie
De beste manier om alleen films en series op te slaan is met grote, goedkope harde schijven, tweedehands inbegrepen, met een beetje redundantie erbovenop.
Sla de SSD’s over, jaag op de laagste prijs per TB, en laat de live tabel hierboven je naar de juiste schijf voor jouw marketplace wijzen. Zet de selector bovenaan eerst op jouw land, zodat de prijzen ook echt van toepassing zijn.
