Il RAID non è un backup. Pensa a quando cancelli accidentalmente un file, o peggio lo fa un malware al posto tuo: il RAID esegue diligentemente esattamente ciò per cui è stato progettato, cancellando la copia duplicata nello stesso identico istante. Un backup, invece, è una copia separata, una che puoi cercare, trovare e ripristinare, evitando il disastro.
In altre parole, un backup è quantomeno quel vecchio hard disk che non sapevi bene come usare, pieno dei dati più importanti della tua vita. Per la casa, saranno probabilmente le foto di famiglia, perché spiegare a mia moglie di aver perso le foto del nostro primo figlio non è una conversazione che voglio affrontare. Per il lavoro, sarà il tuo codice sorgente, o tutte le presentazioni e i documenti che hai accumulato. E no, non mi fido di OneDrive: omg, la loro idea di “versioni” sembra fantastica, finché il file non viene spostato o rinominato! Io ricordo il vecchio nome, non quello nuovo!

Cosa fa davvero il RAID
Il RAID ha esattamente un compito: mantiene il tuo storage online quando un disco muore.
Un disco si guasta, l’array continua a funzionare, sostituisci il disco morto, la vita va avanti. Questo è genuinamente utile. L’uptime conta.
Ma nota bene cosa non copre.
Il RAID protegge dai guasti hardware. Nient’altro.
Perché il RAID non è un backup
Ecco la parte che frega la gente.
Il RAID replica le tue modifiche su tutti i dischi istantaneamente. È proprio questo il suo scopo. Quindi qualsiasi cosa succeda ai tuoi dati succede a tutte le copie contemporaneamente.
- Cancelli una cartella per errore. Sparita da ogni disco all’istante.
- Un ransomware cripta i tuoi file. Criptati su ogni disco all’istante.
- Un cavo o un controller difettoso corrompe i dati. Corrotti su tutto l’array.
- Qualcuno ruba il box, o la casa allaga. Tutti i tuoi dischi, persi insieme.
In ognuno di questi casi, il RAID non fa assolutamente nulla per te. Non c’è una seconda copia intatta a cui tornare.
Un backup è una copia separata che non viene replicata istantaneamente. Quella separazione è tutto il suo valore.
La regola del 3-2-1, che funziona davvero
Smetti di affidarti al RAID e segui questa regola. È lo standard del settore, noioso ma solido, e c’è un motivo.
- Tre copie dei tuoi dati.
- Su due tipi diversi di supporto.
- Con una copia conservata offsite.
Il RAID può assolutamente far parte di questo schema, garantendo l’uptime sul tuo box principale. Ma conta come una sola postazione, non tre.
La copia offsite è l’eroina della storia. Sopravvive all’incendio, al furto e al ransomware che spazza via tutto quello che hai in casa.
Un setup reale e semplice
Ecco cosa monterei io, in pratica.
- NAS principale con RAID per l’uptime, così un disco morto non è un dramma.
- Un secondo backup locale, tipo un disco esterno o un box di riserva, aggiornato regolarmente.
- Una copia offsite, cloud oppure un disco a casa di un amico o di un familiare.
Compra i dischi per tutto questo usando la tabella live qui sopra, puntando al miglior prezzo per TB. Lo storage costa poco. Perdere i tuoi dati no.

Il RAID ti tiene operativo quando un disco muore. Non ti salva da cancellazioni, ransomware, corruzione, furto o incendio.
