Ci sono due domande intrecciate qui: qual è il meglio per il NAS, e qual è il meglio per Plex, e si confondono perché tantissime persone fanno girare il loro server Plex su un NAS.
Quindi, se hai messo Plex su un NAS con un RAID di qualche tipo, qualsiasi tipo, allora ti serve un disco CMR di buona qualità. Anzi, va bene praticamente qualsiasi disco CMR. A chi importa cos’è, dove è stato prima o quante ore ha girato? A te no: hai la ridondanza nel tuo NAS. Questa è la mia opinione, quindi punta al prezzo per giga più basso su un disco CMR, di qualsiasi marca.
Se invece Plex gira semplicemente sul tuo PC, solo per film, va bene qualsiasi disco meccanico, SMR, CMR, il più economico. Film e serie TV non mettono sotto stress lo storage finché non arrivi al 12K, e sul tuo server Plex è improbabile.

I dischi grandi sono il cuore di tutto
Fammi prima sfatare il mito degli SSD.
La tua libreria multimediale non ha bisogno della velocità di un SSD. Un film viene letto dal disco a un ritmo blando, molto più lento di quanto anche il più stanco degli hard disk possa gestire.
Quindi riempi i bay con hard disk grandi, economici e affidabili, e punta al prezzo per TB più basso nella tabella live.
Un piccolo SSD per il sistema operativo o i metadati di Plex va benissimo. I contenuti veri e propri, invece, vanno su ferraglia rotante.
Dischi NAS contro dischi da desktop
È l’eterno dibattito da homelab, quindi ecco il mio parere sincero.
Un box da uno o due bay funzionerà tranquillamente con dei buoni dischi da desktop. Non c’è bisogno di complicarsi la vita.
Ma quando impili quattro, sei o otto dischi nello stesso chassis, le cose cambiano. Le vibrazioni di tutti quei piatti che girano, il carico costante always-on e il calore iniziano a farsi sentire. I dischi NAS ed enterprise sono calibrati proprio per questo, e in un box denso si guadagnano il loro posto.
Abbina il disco alla build, non alle vanterie sui forum.
Affidabilità senza miti
Tutti vogliono la marca magica più affidabile. La verità è meno eccitante.
I dischi moderni dei grandi nomi sono tutti sostanzialmente affidabili. I guasti dipendono più dalla fortuna, dal carico di lavoro e dal raffreddamento che dal logo stampato sopra.
Quindi non tormentarti sulla marca. Fai invece questo.
- Usa la ridondanza, tipo RAIDZ2 o un doppio mirror, così se due dischi muoiono sei comunque a posto.
- Tieni una copia offsite o su cloud di tutto ciò che è insostituibile.
- Raffredda bene i dischi e non stiparli in un box rovente.
La ridondanza batte la fedeltà al brand ogni singola volta.
Come comprerei io
Il piano semplice, denso ed economico.
- Scegli la capacità con il prezzo per TB più basso nella tabella live qui sopra.
- Compra abbastanza dischi da avere subito una vera ridondanza fin dal primo giorno.
- Lascia libero un bay o due, così il te del futuro potrà espandere senza dover rifare tutto.
- Se il tuo NAS lo supporta, aggiungi un piccolo SSD per il sistema operativo.

I migliori dischi per un NAS o un server Plex sono hard disk grandi e affidabili, comprati al prezzo per TB più basso, con la ridondanza che fa il lavoro pesante sul fronte della sicurezza.
