Just go with a spinning HDD — it’s the best choice for long-term backups. Putting aside the fact that SSDs slowly ‘forget’ if they’re not powered on (it takes 10 years or so, don’t panic!), for the same money you could buy 2 or 3 HDDs instead of one SSD for the same storage. And two backups beats one backup any day of the week!

The plan I would actually use
Boring, cheap, bulletproof.
- Big hard drives for the bulk archive, chosen by lowest price per TB on the live table.
- At least two copies, because one drive is not a backup.
- One copy offsite or in the cloud, so a fire or theft does not end you.
- Spin the cold drives up now and then to verify they still read.
That is the 3-2-1 rule on a budget, and it beats any single shiny SSD.
