RAID is not a backup. Consider when you accidentally delete a file — or worse, some malware does it for you: RAID dutifully does exactly what it was designed to do, and deletes the duplicate copy at exactly the same time. A backup, on the other hand, is a separate copy — one you can search for, find and restore, averting disaster.
In other words, a backup is at least that old hard drive you never knew what to do with, full of the most important data in your life. For home, that’ll likely be the family photos — because explaining to my wife that I’ve lost the pictures of our first born is not a conversation I want to have. For work, it’ll be your source code, or all the presentations and documents you’ve accumulated. And no, I’m not relying on OneDrive — omg, their idea of ‘versions’ sounds amazing, until the file is moved or renamed! I can remember the OLD name, not the new one!

What RAID actually does
RAID has exactly one job. It keeps your storage online when a drive dies.
A disk fails, the array keeps running, you swap the dead drive, life goes on. That is genuinely useful. Uptime matters.
But notice what that does not cover.
RAID protects against hardware failure. Nothing else.
Why RAID is not a backup
Here is the part that bites people.
RAID mirrors your changes across drives instantly. That is the whole point. So whatever happens to your data happens to all the copies at once.
- You delete a folder by accident. Gone on every drive immediately.
- Ransomware encrypts your files. Encrypted on every drive immediately.
- A bad cable or controller corrupts data. Corrupted across the array.
- Someone steals the box, or the house floods. All your drives, gone together.
In every one of those cases, RAID does absolutely nothing for you. There is no second, untouched copy to roll back to.
A backup is a separate copy that is not instantly mirrored. That separation is the entire value.
The 3-2-1 rule, which actually works
Stop relying on RAID and follow this instead. It is the boring industry standard for a reason.
- Three copies of your data.
- On two different types of media.
- With one copy kept offsite.
RAID can absolutely be part of this, providing uptime on your main box. But it counts as one location, not three.
The offsite copy is the hero. It survives the fire, the theft and the ransomware that takes out everything in your house.
A simple real world setup
Here is what I would actually run.
- Main NAS with RAID for uptime, so a dead drive is no drama.
- A second local backup, like an external drive or a spare box, updated regularly.
- An offsite copy, either cloud or a drive at a friend or family member’s place.
Buy the drives for all of that using the live table above, chasing the best price per TB. Storage is cheap. Losing your data is not.
The bottom line
RAID keeps you running when a drive dies. It does not save you from deletion, ransomware, corruption, theft or fire.
So no, RAID is not a backup, and treating it like one is the classic way people lose years of files. Run RAID for uptime if you like, but always keep real backups with one copy offsite. Your future self will thank you the day something goes wrong.
