You’re building a NAS. If it’s for home use, any good-quality CMR drive is what you want — you don’t need enterprise. But if you can snag a used enterprise drive that’s just a couple of years old, go for it if the price is right.
You’ll find many enterprise drives have a SAS connector, not your usual SATA connector, so that’s a whole other thing to keep in mind too. As for why an enterprise drive is ‘enterprise’? It’s built to sit in a rack full of drives all vibrating away together, 24/7 — that may not be your setup, so it’s just extra robustness you don’t need if it’s costing you.

How I would decide
The simple rule.
- Small or medium home NAS: consumer NAS drives, best price per TB on the live table.
- Big or busy NAS: enterprise drives, or refurbished enterprise for the value play.
- Either way: redundancy plus an offsite backup, because that is what truly protects you.
