It will not break anything, but it is not great either. Both hard drives and SSDs prefer a little breathing room.
Leave a bit of free space and everything stays fast and happy. Cram it to the brim and things get sluggish.

What happens when a hard drive fills up
Let me explain why a stuffed hard drive drags.
As a hard drive fills, new files get squeezed into whatever scattered gaps are left. The head has to travel further to read and write them, so things slow down, writes especially.
A near-full drive also leaves no room for the system to shuffle things around as it works. The whole machine can feel laggy.
Nothing is damaged. But a drive gasping at ninety-nine percent full is a slow, unhappy drive.
What happens when an SSD fills up
SSDs care about free space too, for a different reason.
An SSD constantly juggles data behind the scenes to spread wear and keep writes fast. It uses spare free space to do that juggling.
Fill it to the brim and you take away that working room. Writes can slow down, and the drive has to work the flash harder. So a packed SSD can lose some of its speed and efficiency.
Give it a little headroom and it stays quick and healthy.
How much to leave free
Here is the simple rule that covers both.
Keep roughly ten to fifteen percent of the drive free.
That is enough for a hard drive to stay nimble and an SSD to manage itself properly. You do not need acres of empty space, just a sensible buffer rather than scraping the very last gigabyte.
If you are constantly deleting things to make room, that is not a maintenance problem. It is a sign you have outgrown the drive.
The real fix for always being full
If you live in the red, no amount of tidying fixes it for long.
The genuine answer is more storage. Either upgrade to a bigger drive, or add a second one and move your bulk files onto it.
