Building a Plex or Jellyfin server and trying to work out how big to make it? The honest answer is bigger than you think, because media libraries only ever grow, and 4K eats space alarmingly fast.
Let me give you real numbers to plan around, by the kind of library you want.
The table above shows the live price per TB on your marketplace for the big cheap drives a media server loves.
It is all about file sizes
The whole calculation comes down to how big your files are.
- A 1080p film is typically a few gigabytes.
- A 4K film commonly runs 40 to 80GB, sometimes more.
That is a massive difference. A 4K library can be ten times the size of the same titles in 1080p. So the single biggest factor in your storage needs is whether you go 4K.
TV shows add up too, since a single series can be dozens of episodes.
Rough sizing by library
Some real anchors to plan around.
- A modest 1080p film and TV library: a few terabytes is comfortable to start.
- A large 1080p collection: 10 to 20TB and climbing.
- A serious 4K library: 40TB and up, often far more, and it fills fast.
Whatever bracket you are in, add headroom. A media library that fits today is full in a few months, so size up.
Why hard drives, and lots of space
Media servers are the perfect home for big cheap hard drives.
Streaming a film reads the file slowly and steadily, so SSD speed is wasted. What you want is maximum cheap capacity, which is exactly what large hard drives deliver. We cover the drive choice in best drives for a NAS or Plex server.
So buy big on the best price per TB, and put the savings into more terabytes rather than speed you will not use.
Do not forget redundancy and backups
A big library deserves protection.
- Run redundancy so a single drive failing does not take your whole collection down.
- Keep a backup of anything you genuinely cannot re-acquire, like home videos or hard-to-find content.
Some media you could redownload, but rebuilding a huge library is a miserable job, and irreplaceable files must be backed up. We explain the approach in how to back up your data.
The bottom line
How much storage a Plex server needs comes down to quality and quantity. A modest 1080p library fits on a few terabytes, while a serious 4K collection can need 40TB and beyond, because 4K files are enormous.
Plan generously, buy big cheap hard drives at the best price per TB from the live table above, run redundancy, and back up the irreplaceable. Do that and your media server has room to grow for years to coem.
