I like speed. I love not waiting for anything — if it can load faster, I’m all for it loading faster. But there are limits, given the extra cost of a Gen 5 versus a Gen 4 PCIe NVMe drive. Ultimately the choice is yours, but a quality gen 4 will likely suffice. Unless you’re putting it to some high-speed use like pure gaming (PS5 storage), loading multi-GB AI models over and over, or some other specific use case, gen 4 is a fantastic buy.
The table above shows the best value NVMe drives on your marketplace, sorted so the deals rise to the top.
The honest answer
A good fast NVMe in 2026 is a quality gen 4 drive at a sensible price.
That is the whole secret.
Gen 4 NVMe is blisteringly fast, runs cool enough without a chunky heatsink, and costs far less than the latest gen 5 halo drives. The live table is full of them.
Why gen 5 is mostly a trap
Gen 5 NVMe drives win benchmarks. They lose at real life.
They run hot, often demand a big heatsink or active cooling, and cost a clear premium. In return you get load times that are a fraction of a second faster, if you can even perceive it.
Unless you do very specific professional work that hammers sequential throughput all day, that money is wasted.
Speed you cannot feel is not worth paying for.
SATA versus NVMe, quickly
If you landed here from the SSD side, a quick reminder.
A SATA SSD is plenty for bulk storage and budget builds. NVMe earns its keep on big transfers, scratch disks and heavy workloads.
For a boot and apps drive, a mid range NVMe is the lovely middle ground. Fast where it counts, cheap enough to not hurt.
How I would buy
My no nonsense plan.
- Open the live table and find the cheapest well reviewed gen 4 NVMe per TB.
- Go 2TB over 1TB if the price per TB is close, because games and projects balloon.
- Ignore gen 5 unless you have a concrete, heavy reason.
Do that and your PC feels instant for a fraction of the bragging rights money.
Brands worth trusting
You wanted brand names, so here are the ones I happily recommend for NVMe.
- Samsung: the 990 and 980 lines are the benchmark everyone else chases.
- WD Black: the SN770 and SN850 series are fast, cool and well priced.
- Crucial: the P3 and P5 ranges are brilliant value gen 4 drives.
- Solidigm and Kingston: dependable value picks when they undercut on price per TB.
Any of those is a safe buy. Sort the live table by price per TB and grab whichever good name sits highest for your capacity.
The bottom line
A good fast affordable NVMe is a mid range gen 4 drive with a low price per TB and a decent name behind it.
The live table above shows exactly which ones qualify on your marketplace. Set the selector up top to your country, then grab the one sitting proudly near the top. Easy.
