Bought an SSD and ready to put it in your desktop? Good news, this is genuinely one of the easiest upgrades you can do. A screwdriver and a few minutes is all it takes.

There are two types to install, M.2 and 2.5 inch SATA, and both are simple. Let me walk you through each.

The table above shows the live SSD prices on your marketplace so you can grab the right drive first.

Before you start

A couple of quick safety basics.

That is the whole prep. Now to the drive.

Installing an M.2 SSD

This is the tiny stick that slots straight onto the motherboard. It is the quickest install going.

  1. Find the M.2 slot on your motherboard. Check the manual if you are unsure which one to use.
  2. Remove the little mounting screw, and the heatsink if there is one.
  3. Slide the drive into the slot at a slight angle, then press it down flat.
  4. Secure it with the small screw. Refit the heatsink if you removed one.

That is it. One screw, one minute. No cables at all.

Installing a 2.5 inch SATA SSD

The slightly larger drive that mounts in the case. Still easy, just two cables.

  1. Mount the drive in a 2.5 inch bay or bracket, securing it with screws.
  2. Connect a SATA data cable from the drive to a SATA port on the motherboard.
  3. Connect a SATA power cable from the power supply to the drive.
  4. Tidy the cables and you are done.

Two cables and a mounting point. Nothing tricky.

After you install it

Do not panic when it does not appear straight away.

A new drive arrives blank, so it will not show up in your file explorer until you initialise and format it. Open your disk management tool, initialise the drive, create a volume and format it, and it appears as normal. We cover this in new hard drive not showing up.

If this is your new main drive, you will also either clone your old drive onto it or do a fresh install, which we cover in how to move Windows to a new SSD.

The bottom line

Installing an SSD in a desktop is easy. An M.2 drive slots in with a single screw, and a 2.5 inch SATA drive is just a mount and two cables. Power off, discharge static, fit the drive, and you are done.

Then initialise and format it so it shows up, and clone or install your system if it is the main drive. Grab the right SSD from the live prices above, and enjoy the upgrade. It really is that strightforward.
