Should you defragment an SSD? No, never; if you have don’t worry it will be ok if it’s fairly new, but certainly don’t make a habit of it. Defragging exists to put all the bits on larger files ‘together’ next to each other. Think of it like putting all the same colour Lego pieces together, and then the exact same Lego pieces all in little piles next to each other, ready for the build, or ready for you to read the files. SSDs work differently, like turning the page on the Lego instructions and all the pieces just appear ready for that page; someone should really invent that.

Why defragging exists at all
Quick history, so this makes sense.
On a hard drive, files get scattered across a spinning platter. A physical head has to move to each piece, and that movement is slow. Defragging gathers the pieces together so the head travels less. Genuinely useful, on a hard drive.
Now here is the thing about an SSD.
It has no moving parts. It reaches any piece of data instantly, no matter where it sits. There is no head, no travel, no penalty for scattered files.
So gathering the pieces together achieves precisely nothing. The whole point of defragging does not apply.
Why it is actually harmful
It is not just useless. It costs you something.
SSDs have a finite number of writes before the flash wears out. You will likely never hit that limit in normal use, but defragging is exactly the kind of pointless write activity that eats into it for zero gain.
A full defrag rewrites huge amounts of data just to rearrange it on a drive that does not care where data lives.
So you spend write cycles, gain nothing, and very slightly shorten the drive’s life. All downside.
What an SSD actually needs
The good news is SSD maintenance is almost nothing.
- Make sure TRIM is enabled. It almost always is by default. TRIM quietly keeps the drive tidy and fast.
- Leave some free space, which helps the drive manage itself.
- Keep the firmware updated now and then.
- That is the entire list.
Modern operating systems already know the difference between an SSD and a hard drive. They run TRIM on SSDs and only defrag actual spinning drives. So in most cases you do not need to lift a finger.
The bottom line
Do not defragment an SSD. Defragging only helps spinning hard drives, and on an SSD it just burns write cycles for no benefit at all. Leave TRIM on and let the drive get on with it.
