A classic worry for the careful types. Does turning your computer off and on every day slowly wear out the hard drive?
Here is the honest, reassuring answer.
Technically yes, a tiny bit. Practically no, not in any way you will ever notice.
Normal daily on and off use will not wear out a modern drive in its usable life. You can switch your PC off without guilt.
The table above shows the live price per TB on your marketplace, for the day a drive eventually retires, on its own schedule, not because you flicked the switch.
The grain of truth
Let me be fair to the worry, because it is not pure myth.
Every time a hard drive powers up, it spins the platters from rest and the heads load into position. When it powers down, the heads park. Those are small mechanical events, and each one adds a sliver of wear.
So yes, a power cycle is not completely free. There is a tiny cost.
The question is whether that tiny cost ever adds up to anything. And the answer is reassuring.
Why it does not matter in practice
Here is the number that ends the worry.
Modern hard drives are rated for hundreds of thousands of load and unload cycles. Hundreds of thousands.
Switch your computer on and off a few times a day, every day, for many years, and you will not get anywhere near that limit. The drive will be long obsolete first.
So the wear from normal power cycling is real but utterly trivial. It is not a reason to change your habits.
On all the time, or off?
This is the more useful version of the question.
- Leaving a drive running avoids start-stop wear, which is why an always-on NAS just spins constantly. But it adds running hours, heat and power use.
- Switching off daily adds tiny power-cycle wear, but cuts total running hours and saves electricity.
For a normal home computer, switching it off when you are done is completely fine. For a NAS that needs to be available, leaving it on is fine too. Neither choice meaningfully shortens the drive’s life.
What actually wears a drive out
Since power cycles are a minor factor, here is what really matters.
- Total running hours and the luck of the model.
- Heat, so keep drives cool and ventilated.
- Vibration and knocks, especially to a running drive.
Look after those, and the on-off question becomes irrelevant. And whatever you do, keep backups, because every drive dies eventually regardless of how kindly you treat it.
The bottom line
Turning your computer on and off does add a tiny bit of wear, but modern drives handle hundreds of thousands of cycles, so normal use will never wear one out that way.
Switch off daily or leave it running, whichever suits you, and worry instead about cooling, knocks and backups. When a drive does eventually retire on its own terms, grab a replacement from the live prices above and carry on without a second thoght.
