The price fluctuates constantly — at least weekly, the overall average price changes. Since the AI boom kicked off in 2023, the year after that the price of drives just went up, and up, and up some more. It’s 2026 now and they’re plateauing, but that might not be the end of it: big companies are folding entire brands down because they’re lowly ‘consumer’ brands, next to the far more profitable AI-enterprise side. The price per GB has doubled in just a couple of years.
BUT the price is at least visible and easy to calculate (unlike a corporate cloud-compute bill), so take a look at the box above — it has today’s prices, live from the marketplace of your choice, chosen at the top.
Look at that number. That is your benchmark. Everything else is just how to read it.
How to judge a price per TB
Here is the simple framework I use.
- Clearly below the live median on a big drive: a good buy.
- Well under the median: a genuine deal, grab it.
- Around the median: fine, normal, no need to rush.
- Above the median: someone is hoping you will not check. You just did.
That is it. The live median does the heavy lifting, and your job is just to beat it.
Why price per TB beats the sticker price
People fixate on the total price. That is the trap.
A 1TB drive for a low number looks cheap. But work out the price per TB and it is often terrible value.
A bigger drive with a scarier sticker frequently buys you far more storage per pound or dollar.
Price per TB is the great equaliser. It strips away capacity and brand and shows you the one thing that matters: how much storage your money actually buys.
Bigger is almost always cheaper per TB
There is a reason datahoarders chase big drives.
Every drive has fixed costs baked in. The motor, the casing, the controller. Those cost roughly the same whether the drive holds 2TB or 20TB.
Spread that fixed cost across more terabytes and the price per TB tumbles.
So the best value almost always lives near the top of the capacity range, not at the cheap looking bottom.
SSDs play by different numbers
Quick note so nobody gets confused.
SSDs cost far more per TB than hard drives, so do not compare the two on the same scale. A good SSD price per TB is naturally much higher than a good HDD one.
If you are after flash, check the SSD focused pages instead, because the benchmark is completely different.
How to actually use this page
Dead simple.
- Set the marketplace selector up top to your country so the median is truly yours.
- Read the live median in the box above.
- Scan the top five deals already beating it.
- Buy big, beat the median, and do not overthink it.
The bottom line
A good price per TB is not a fixed number you memorise. It is whatever sits comfortably below today’s live median for your marketplace.
Use the box above as your live benchmark, favour big drives for the best value, keep SSDs on their own separate scale, and let the real data tell you when a price is genuinely good. That beats any number a blogger typed once and forgot to update.
