Picking drives for your NAS and torn between WD Red and Seagate IronWolf? Good news. You almost cannot go wrong, because both are genuinely excellent NAS drives.
The honest truth. They are far more alike than different, and neither is clearly better. So the real decider is price per TB.
Buy whichever is cheaper at the capacity you want, run redundancy, and you are golden.
The table above shows the live price per TB on your marketplace to settle it for you.
What they have in common
Both are purpose-built for life in a NAS, and that is what matters.
- Rated for 24/7 always-on running.
- Built to tolerate the vibration of several drives in one chassis.
- Firmware tuned for array use rather than a single desktop drive.
This is exactly the duty a NAS demands, and both ranges deliver it. Drop either into your NAS and it will do the job it was made for.
Reliability: closer than the fans admit
People love to argue brands, so let me cut through it.
Large-scale failure data shows the major NAS lines perform comparably. Neither WD Red nor Seagate IronWolf has a decisive, lasting reliability edge.
Reliability tracks the specific model, the batch and your cooling far more than the logo on the label. We cover this in are bigger hard drives less reliable and the most reliable hard drive brand.
So do not pay a premium chasing a brand reliability myth. Both are dependable.
The one real warning: CMR not SMR
This matters more than the brand choice, so read it.
Some smaller WD Red drives historically used SMR, a recording method that can perform badly in NAS arrays. The Red Plus and Red Pro lines are CMR, which is what you want.
So whichever brand you pick, confirm the drive is a CMR model. We explain why in our guide to CMR and SMR. Get the recording type right and either brand is great.
How to actually decide
Simple, value-led approach.
- Pick your capacity.
- Check the live table above and buy whichever of WD Red or Seagate IronWolf is cheaper per TB at that size, in a CMR model.
- Run redundancy so any single drive failing is a non event.
- Keep an offsite backup of the irreplaceable stuff.
That is the whole decision. Let price, not brand loyalty, choose.
The bottom line
WD Red and Seagate IronWolf are both excellent NAS drives with very similar reliability, so there is no wrong choice. Buy whichever has the best price per TB at your capacity, make sure it is a CMR model, and run redundancy.
Check the live prices above, grab the better value of the two, and fill your NAS with confidence. The drives are the easy part once you stop overthinking the bran.
