One of the most common computing mix-ups, and an easy one to clear up. Storage and memory sound similar but do completely different jobs.
Here is the one-line version.
Storage is where your files live permanently. Memory, or RAM, is the temporary workspace the computer uses while it is running.
Get that distinction and a lot of confusion disappears.
The table above shows the live price per TB on your marketplace, for when it is storage you actually need.
Storage: your permanent shelf
Think of storage as a big shelf where everything lives.
Your photos, documents, programs and the operating system itself all sit in storage. It keeps them safe even when the power is off, which is why your files are still there tomorrow.
Storage is your hard drive or SSD. It is large, measured in hundreds of gigabytes or terabytes, and it holds your stuff for the long term.
When people talk about how much space a computer has, they mean storage.
Memory: your temporary desk
Now picture a desk where you actually work.
Memory, or RAM, is fast, temporary workspace. When you open a program or a file, the computer loads it from the shelf onto the desk, so it can work with it quickly.
RAM is small compared to storage, measured in gigabytes, and crucially it empties every time you shut down. It does not keep anything permanently. It is just the active working area.
That is why more RAM helps you juggle more things at once, but it does not give you more room to store files.
Why people mix them up
The confusion is understandable.
Both are measured in gigabytes, and both affect how a computer feels. But they are not interchangeable, and more of one will not fix a shortage of the other.
- Out of space for files and programs? That is storage.
- Computer struggling with lots of things open at once? That might be RAM.
Buying a bigger drive will not speed up a sluggish, overloaded machine, and adding RAM will not give you room for more photos.
Which do you need?
Match the fix to the symptom.
- Running out of room, getting low-space warnings, no space for new programs or files? You need more storage. Check the live prices above.
- Everything crawls when you open many tabs or apps at once, lots of waiting and stuttering with heavy multitasking? You may need more RAM.
Two different problems, two different upgrades.
The bottom line
Storage is your drive, the permanent home for your files and programs, kept safe when the power is off. Memory, or RAM, is fast temporary workspace for whatever you are doing right now, and it empties on shutdown.
They are not the same, and more of one will not do the other’s job. Work out whether you are short on space or struggling with multitasking, and upgrade the right one. If it is space you need, grab a good value drive from the live prices above and give your files a bigger home. Simple once you no the difference.
